The ripple effect

Went this a.m. to funeral of one of my mom’s very good friends. Also there were a Vietnamese-American family that Marge and her husband sponsored — along with their church in Holland, OH — back in 1975 and beyond when the family came to the U.S. The daughter of that family was 11 when she came over — and is now a physician in CA. In fact, all three came from CA to show their respect for this quiet, generous woman. With tears in her eyes, the woman, now 52, said to me after the service, “There are no words for how much this woman meant to my family — and what she did for us and how she continued to keep in touch. And, the ripple effects, too, with my children and my brother’s children.”

I knew this friend of my mom’s for all of my life so am quite familiar with what kind of person she was. While I remain cynical about my government’s actions in the world, this sweet story reminded me that individuals can make a big difference.
