66 years isn’t even that long ago, really. I don’t question Truman’s decision. People choose violence every day. The challenge is closer than getting others to do what we think they ought, as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn pointed out long ago in his masterful “The Gulag Archipelago.”
“If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
Being committed to peace is likely the work of a lifetime.
