Remembering MJ

“I’ll Be There” and “Ben” were my two favorite Michael Jackson songs when I was about 13 years old.

Love this Berry Gordy story: The Jackson 5 were recording “I’ll Be There” and Gordy told them to stop. He asked Michael to include the phrase, “Just look over your shoulder, honey.” They did, except Michael pluralized the word shoulder.

When he did, his brother stopped the recording session, which angered Gordy. When Michael’s brother said, “But he made a mistake, he said ‘shoulders,'” Gordy said, “That’s OK. Keep going. I love mistakes.”

Only a genius would know how to make a genius’ performance even better.
